PROJECT BRIEF

Graduate Students in Visual Studies (GSVS) is a graduate organization at Missouri State University. Members of this organization are professional artists and designers pursuing their terminal degrees.

The mission of GSVS is to create an inclusive and supportive environment for graduate students in visual studies. This environment will enable them to explore creative ideas, develop their artistic practice, and engage with peers, faculty, and the broader art community. They strive to foster an environment of critical engagement and collaboration by providing resources, programming, and opportunities to enhance their membership's intellectual and creative development.

GSVS envisioned a unique logo that showcased artistic expression, and individuality. The logo and brand identity will be used for web icons, social media, t-shirts, and promotional flyers.

CUSTOM LETTERFORMS

The letter “G” is one of my favorite characters to work with. The double-storey lowercase g variant is such a unique and beautiful form. Going back to the brief, this form well represents individuality, creative problem solving, and critical thinking.

I spent hours researching decorative typefaces with interesting lowercase g’s, however, I eventually decided on creating a custom g for the logo. It seemed fitting that a group of artists who spend their lives working to produce unique and innovative art pieces have a logo mark completely unique to them.

This g was created by examining the relationship between the positive and negative space in experimenting with a rounded rectangle and an oval.

The interplay of these two shapes creates a vast contrast between thick and thin lines and an fluid movement from round corners to sharper angles.
